Sigma 85mm F1.2 DG | Art: A Compact F1.2 Portrait Prime for Sony E and L-Mount
Sigma officially announced the 85mm F1.2 DG | Art on 8 September 2026. It is the company’s first 85mm with an F1.2 aperture and the third F1.2 Art prime for full-frame mirrorless cameras, following the 35mm F1.2 DG II and the 50mm F1.2 DG DN. The lens is offered in Sony E-mount and L-Mount. For both systems it becomes the first widely available autofocus 85mm F1.2.
Sony does not sell an 85mm F1.2 of its own; its flagship remains the FE 85mm F1.4 GM II. Sigma therefore fills a genuine gap on E-mount, while pricing the lens well below Canon RF and Nikon Z 85mm F1.2 primes.
Optics and bokeh
The optical formula uses **17 elements in 12 groups**, including two SLD elements, anomalous-dispersion glass and three aspherical lenses. A **13-blade** rounded diaphragm is intended to keep the bokeh circular and smooth from F1.2. Sigma emphasises high resolution wide open and tight control of chromatic aberration and sagittal coma.
Minimum focus distance is **84 cm**, for a maximum magnification of **0.11×**. Filter thread is **82 mm**. Angle of view on full frame is 28.6°.
Weight, autofocus and controls
Sigma describes the lens as the **smallest and lightest autofocus 85mm F1.2 in its class**: **905 g**, 87.2 mm in diameter and 121.7 mm long on E-mount (119.7 mm on L-Mount). That is about 24% lighter than the Canon RF 85mm F1.2 L and 22% lighter than the Nikon Z 85mm F1.2 S.
Dual HLA linear actuators provide fast, quiet autofocus with reduced focus breathing for video. The barrel includes the usual Art controls: aperture ring, aperture lock, click/de-click switch, two customizable AFL buttons and an AF/MF switch. Dust- and splash-resistant construction, water- and oil-repellent coating on the front element. There is no optical stabilisation.

US availability is scheduled for 6 October 2026. In Japan, Sigma lists 30 September 2026 (direct price ¥253,000). Pre-orders open by market. Included accessories: LH878-08 hood, front and rear caps, pouch.
Who is it for?
The lens is aimed mainly at:
- Sony (and L-Mount) portrait shooters who want autofocus at F1.2, which the camera maker does not offer;
- wedding and fashion photographers who need strong subject separation;
- owners of the 35mm and 50mm F1.2 Art primes who want to complete the set.
It remains heavier and bulkier than an 85mm F1.4 (Sigma’s own 85mm F1.4 DG DN Art weighs 625 g). Depth of field at F1.2 demands precise focusing. In return, the price sits well below Canon and Nikon 85mm F1.2 lenses, and often below the Sony 85mm F1.4 GM II.
In short, Sigma is not inventing the ultra-fast 85mm, but it is finally offering an autofocus, relatively light and aggressively priced version for E-mount and L-Mount.
