Fujifilm officially announced the **FUJINON XF400mmF4.5 R LM OIS WR** on 4 September 2026, a super-telephoto prime designed for APS-C X Series cameras. With a full-frame equivalent focal length of 609 mm and a maximum aperture of F4.5, the lens fills the gap between the XF200mm F2 and the XF500mm F5.6. It is aimed primarily at wildlife, sports, and aviation photographers who need substantial reach without the usual bulk of optics in this class.

The optical construction comprises "21 elements in 14 groups", including "two Super ED and four ED elements". Fujifilm states that this formula, closely related to that of the XF500mm F5.6 but revised in the rear group, delivers higher sharpness and better control of chromatic aberration, a common weakness of super-telephoto lenses.

The nine-blade rounded diaphragm produces gradual bokeh, which is particularly useful for isolating a bird or a vehicle from the background. The minimum focusing distance is 2.75 m, for a maximum magnification of 0.16×. The angle of view is 4.1°. The front thread accepts 95 mm filters.

The barrel uses the silver-white finish characteristic of Fujifilm super-telephotos, chosen to limit heat build-up in sunlight. Twenty weather-sealing points, a fluorine coating on the front element, and operation down to −10 °C allow use in poor conditions. The rotating tripod collar is Arca-Swiss compatible and can be removed.

Optical image stabilization provides up to 5.5 stops (CIPA standard, pitch/yaw). Combined with an internal linear motor, it makes handheld work realistic, including at 1/2000 s and faster. Autofocus is described as fast and nearly silent, an advantage when photographing wildlife that must not be disturbed.

On the barrel, Fujifilm has grouped the controls expected on a professional optic:
- focus-range selector (FULL / 5 m–∞);
- OIS switch;
- focus-preset function (SET) with instant recall;
- a focus-control button near the front, assignable to AF-L, AF, or Preset.

These functions are especially useful when the subject moves through a predictable zone (track, perch, finish line).

## Teleconverters: up to a 1,219 mm equivalent

The lens is fully compatible with the XF1.4X TC WR and XF2X TC WR teleconverters:


This flexibility allows a shift from a “bird in flight” framing to a very tight crop without changing lenses.

Together with the XF200mm F2 and the XF500mm F5.6, Fujifilm now offers a trio of primes covering approximately 305 mm to 762 mm in full-frame equivalent terms. The XF400mm F4.5 stands out with a half-stop faster aperture than the 500 mm, lower weight, and, according to the manufacturer, slightly higher sharpness.

The announced price is USD 3,199.95, 2,750.00€ and CAD 3,899.99. Availability is scheduled for mid-September 2026. In the United Kingdom, the launch price is £2,499.

The XF400mm F4.5 is particularly well suited to:
- wildlife photographers who want a more manageable “bird” focal length than a 500 mm or a 150-600 mm;
- sports and aviation specialists who prioritise handheld responsiveness;
- users already equipped with XF teleconverters and an X-H2S or X-H2 body.

It does not replace a versatile zoom such as the XF150-600mm, which is more flexible in framing but heavier and slower. Nor does it match the XF200mm F2 for subject separation and light-gathering. It does, however, offer a rare compromise: a true 400 mm focal length, an F4.5 aperture, and a weight compatible with a full day of walking.

In short, Fujifilm is not inventing a new category, but refining a well-identified tool. The XF400mm F4.5 R LM OIS WR confirms that the APS-C format can still deliver super-telephoto lenses that are both optically ambitious and genuinely portable. Early field tests, including work with birds of prey, point to reassuring handling and image quality consistent with the manufacturer’s claims.
